Each September, Sepsis Awareness Month shines a spotlight on one of the world’s most serious — yet often overlooked — medical emergencies. Despite being responsible for 11 million deaths worldwide every year, public awareness of sepsis remains dangerously low. In fact, more people die from sepsis annually than from breast, bowel, and prostate cancer combined.
That’s why at the Viking Education Centre, we are offering a FREE online course on sepsis for carers, healthcare assistants, and medical professionals who want to strengthen their knowledge and confidence in spotting the signs.
What is Sepsis?
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to an infection. Instead of fighting the infection, the body begins attacking its own organs and tissues. Left untreated, this can lead to organ failure, septic shock, and death.
Common infections that may lead to sepsis include:
Pneumonia and chest infections
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Skin infections (e.g., cellulitis)
Abdominal infections
👉 In our free course, we explain in detail how to spot the earliest signs of sepsis in both adults and children. https://www.thevikingeducationcentre.co.uk/programs
Who is Most at Risk?
While anyone can develop sepsis, those at higher risk include:
Adults over 65
Infants and babies
People with weakened immune systems
People with chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes, kidney or liver disease)
People without a spleen
Our course is designed specifically for carers and frontline staff, giving practical, real-world knowledge to help protect vulnerable groups.
Why Every Hour Counts
Sepsis is a medical emergency. Every hour without treatment increases the risk of death. The Sepsis 6 bundle — oxygen, blood cultures, antibiotics, IV fluids, lactate check, urine monitoring — must be delivered within the first hour of recognition.
By completing our free course, you’ll learn how to:✔️ Recognise the symptoms quickly✔️ Understand the role of the NEWS2 scoring system✔️ Take immediate action to escalate care✔️ Follow best practice for sepsis management
